WHAT ABOUT SPORTS DRINKS?
While advertisers would love for you to think otherwise, you don’t need to down a Gatorade after spending half an hour on the elliptical or twenty minutes lifting weights. Provided you’re not skimping on sodium and are choosing a diet filled with fresh food, your body can balance its electrolytes after “normal” exercise. A glass of water—not a special sports drink—will work just fine to quench your thirst and replenish your water stores.
If you’re exercising over an hour, it’s a good idea to eat and/or drink something that provides glucose (i.e., fuel) in the form of carbohydrates and electrolytes (particularly sodium). Dana advises endurance athlete clients to steer clear of any beverage loaded with artificial colors and added sugar and instead choose our following DIY drink.
